Freedom from Fear

This course looks at freedom from ungodly fear and those worries that can paralyze us.

Firstly, there are three types of fear:

1. Rational fear - a godly emotion - which warns us to take avoiding action in a potentially dangerous situation. This natural fear, such as hearing an intruder in your house or seeing a speeding car coming toward you, is a warning device and is God-given.

2. The fear of the Lord. This is a godly fear that comes with recognising God's awesome sovereignty and therefore having a respect for Him which brings fear into the heart at the thought of grieving Him.

3. The third type of fear is ungodly and can even become a paralyzing phobia. Some people are scared of heights, snakes, spiders, illness, blood, enclosed spaces, public speaking, and even thunder. When fear becomes irrational then it hinders us from living the free life Christ died to give and is in direct war with faith.

One of the enemy's strategies is to make us fearful, and this prevents us from living in true freedom in Christ. Fear is often rooted in lies. Fear says God is not big enough, strong enough, honest enough, or faithful enough. Doubt and unbelief prevent you from believing every word in the Word of God and that gives room for the enemy to speak lies that cause fear. John 8:44 says of the devil "he is a liar and the father of lies."

Fear can present itself in our lives in many ways including anxiety, worry, apprehension, tension, terror, timidity, fright, panic, phobias, and shock. Fear affects personal and work relationships as well as the ability of a person to function normally in everyday life. God desires so much more than a fearful existence.
